After living in their home for almost 2 decades, the clients were ready to make some updates to the home to utilize the space better and enhance the comfort of the kitchen and laundry room. The wife was inspired by a prominent vintage kitchen in the video game Fallout and sent us on a journey to recreate the vibe in her home!
The hardest obstacle to face was scheduling and keeping the project on target during 2020. The completion date was compromised when a laborer came into contact with COVID-19. We had to shut down the job site for two weeks, making it a battle to get back on schedule once we could begin work again. We also had to phase the project and do one room at a time as to not displace them as much as possible- which put the project at COVID risk for longer than we would have liked.
To create a focal point in the home for the kitchen that could be seen from multiple rooms, we removed the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. We also built out the laundry room closer to the kitchen to absorb the wasted space. The most prominent kitchen from the video game Fallout featured aqua colors, checkerboard flooring, a yellow backsplash and bubbly retro appliances. That inspired us to look into Big Chill appliances and chunky FiestaWare ceramic tiles. Big Chills Jadite Green colors paired perfectly with white cabinets and the clients collection of jade milk glass dishware. On the floor we 40’s looking laminate tiles in an emerald green and white checkerboard pattern. We more than doubled the size of the laundry room giving the clients ample storage capacity serving both as a pantry and laundry space. We created a space for the kitty litterbox under the sink and wrapped the sides of the cabinets in tile so that they could be kept clean and free from damage. We installed 2 solatubes for natural light, and one of them even has an integrated exhaust fan!
Though the pandemic tested our patience, the infectious charm and excitement of the clients and their home lifted our spirits during challenges and brought constant joy to the jobsite. The clients are in love with their new storage capabilities as well as their new “vintage” kitchen!
